Over the last few days I've made it my goal to learn about the principles of lean manufacturing. From what I've learned, I believe digital signage communication is a perfect complement to this production practice.

What is Lean?

Lean manufacturing is a management and manufacturing philosophy born out of the Toyota Production System. The primary objectives of lean are the continuous improvement of products and processes and the elimination of waste throughout an organization. Clear, immediate and dynamic communication is important to achieving these objectives, and digital signage is an ideal communication medium for lean organizations.

Visual Controls

An important tool in the practice of lean manufacturing is the use of visual controls. Visual controls use graphic depictions instead of written instructions to communicate information. A simple example of visual controls is a crosswalk signal.

Years ago, the standard crosswalk signal displayed the words "Walk" or "Don't Walk" to control pedestrian traffic. Now, however, most signals use a graphical representation of a person walking to represent the word "Walk," and a halting hand to represent the words "Don't Walk." The goal is for someone unfamiliar with the situation to be able to understand the process.

Dynamic Visual Controls

Digital signage is an excellent platform for communications in a manufacturing facility, because it allows for very clear communications by providing full sight, sound and motion to depict proper methods for using tools and machines. Digital signage can also be used to show workers what a defective product looks like, so they know what to look for and can take action when problems arise.

One large digital display can be used to communicate several different messages to factory workers. Screens can even be configured to display different messages at different times of the day in the case of multiple shifts or production runs. And because products and processes are always evolving in a lean organization, visual controls need to be constantly updated and improved as well.

Digital signage eliminates the waste of printing, distributing and installing updated posters, banners and graphics. And with prices of flat-screen TVs constantly dropping, many lean organizations are finding that digital signage deployments are a good investment in lean communication.
What I would like to do is stream the signage content directly to the monitors from the data center via Ethernet. Is this possible? I would like the ability so steam pics, video, sound etc. I really don’t want to have to hook up an individual computer to each of the monitors. I just want the content pushed directly to the monitor over the network. There will be a total of four monitors, each displaying different content.

Thanks.
